    The Centre for Adolescent Health and The Education Hub at The Royal Children's Hospital are excited to bring health professionals a day of education from experts to assist with providing health care for young people.

    Meeting health needs for children in care

    About: Join us for an Education Day, specially designed for health professionals dedicated to the care of children in state care. This event focuses on community caregivers and features insights from leading experts in vulnerable child health, family violence, social work, trauma-informed preventive care, and children's bioethics. Don't miss this opportunity to enhance your knowledge and make a difference in the lives of these children.

    Advanced Paediatric Perioperative Skills Day

    About:The Advanced Paediatric Perioperative Skills Day on the 29th October 2024 will provide practical education directed to and relevant for experienced Perioperative Nurses seeking to improve their Paediatric skills.

    Includes: A mixture of lecture and workshop/skill station based interactive education following topics;

    • Anaphylaxis in the Perioperative Environment
    • Anaesthesia Emergencies
    • Is it partial or complete? Laryngospasm Case Studies
    • Pain Management and Assessment.

    MCHN Education Day @ RCH 22 Oct 2024

    About:The MCHN Education Day on 22nd October 2024 will provide practical education directed to and relevant for Maternal Child Health Nurses. 

    Includes: A day of interactive education given by experts in their field on the following topics; common medical concerns in kids, ask the panel, common paediatric skin issues, allergy update, unsettled babies and building partnerships with families and practical hip dysplasia.  

    Intended audience: National Maternal and Child Health Nurses (including students).   

    Date: Tuesday 22nd October, 9.00 am to 4.15 pm (Enrolments close Wed, 16th Oct at 12noon). 

    Where: Royal Children's Hospital, Vernon Collins Theatre, HELP, Level.

    Paediatric Health Education MCHN 2024-25

    About: This online education program based on a Community of Practice, is designed specifically for Maternal and Child Health Nurses.

    Intended audience: Maternal and Child Health Nurses (including students), Community Nurses and Allied Health Professionals with an interest.

    Unit 1 Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetics

    The Department of Nutrition and Food Services at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne began a Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetics in 1997. This highly regarded course is exclusively for qualified dietitians, with the course content targeted to meet the training needs and learning outcomes for Paediatric Dietitians. 

    Unit 1 Topics

    General Paediatrics:

    • Growth and nutritional assessment
    • Breastfeeding and introduction of solids
    • Infant formula - new developments and manipulations to meet altered requirements
    • Toddler nutrition and fussy eating
    • Workshops on growth and energy requirements from infancy through to adolescents

    Specific Nutrition Problems:

    • Common childhood disorders requiring nutritional intervention such as growth faltering and iron deficiency
    • Management of common infant gastrointestinal disorders: constipation, colic, reflux and gastroenteritis.
    • Feeding difficulties including practical aspects of feeding children with a disability
    • Enteral feeding
    • Dietary management of IgE mediated allergy

    Community Nutrition Topics:

    • Paediatric public health issues e.g. childhood obesity

    Intended audience: University entry criteria apply. Candidates must hold a graduate or post graduate qualification in Dietetics. Evidence of qualifications must be provided. Once you have completed registration please email evidence of qualifications to: nutrition.education@rch.org.au

    Date and time: Monday 16th September - Thursday 19th September 2024 (enrolment closes on Wednesday 4th September 2359hrs)

    Cost: $950 + GST

    Mode of delivery: Face-to-face only, no online option. The course will not be recorded.

    Note - we will now be alternating the course between online and face-to-face each year to accommodate both learning mode preferences.

    Venue: Ella Latham Theatre, The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne

    Course hours: 8.45am - 4.00pm daily. Note some days will have slightly altered hours.

    Approximately 24 contact hours with additional non-contact hours required to complete an assessment task.   

    Other: We are a paper-free event. Resources for the event will be added 1 week before the event is due to take place. Morning tea and afternoon tea will be provided. Participants can either bring their own lunch or purchase on site.

    Victorian Paediatric Trauma Management

    This online learning package has been designed by the Trauma Service at the Royal Children’s Hospital, to support the learning of health professionals throughout Victoria who are involved in the reception and immediate care of injured children.

    It is expected that those who are attending face-to-face Outreach programs facilitated by the RCH Trauma Service will complete this learning package in full prior to attending.

    Intended audience: Nurses, Doctors and Paramedics working in Victoria involved in the care of children with major injuries.

    The content of this resource is based on the systems that operate in Victoria, Australia. Learners outside Victoria are welcome to undertake the learning, however, please be aware of the differences to practice and policies relevant to other jurisdictions.

    Paediatric Health Education for General Practitioners 2024

    About: This multifaceted online education program has been designed specifically for General Practitioners.  

    Includes: Monthly interactive webinars, recordings available, online chat forum, resources and feedback to support your practice in child and adolescent health and development. 

    Topics include: Early detection of cerebral palsy, assessment and management of tonsil and ear troubles in children, paediatric skin, gender diversity in children, headaches and migraine management in children, infant mental health and much more.  

    Intended audience: General Practitioners

    Cost: $250 + GST to access all course materials from February 2024 until February 2025 

    CPD Points: 10 hours of education activities towards your CPD log. Additional opportunities for reviewing performance through our unique platform and peer group discussion meetings.

    Gastrostomy Care

    Gastrostomy Care

    About: This learning package will cover all the information required to care for a newly inserted gastrostomy (PEG) and ongoing care. Included is educational presentations and demonstration videos. 

    A gastrostomy is a hole made directly through the abdominal wall into the stomach. It is usually used as an alternative or additional means of providing feeds, fluids and / or medications for those who are unable to safely and adequately consume these by mouth.The initial gastrostomy is created with the aid of an endoscope (PEG), or by a laparoscopic or open surgical procedure. 

    Intended audience: Doctors, nurses, dietitians and all health professionals caring for children with gastrostomy tubes. 

    Total time: The complete learning package should take approximately 60 minutes 

    Cost: free

    CPD points: equivalent to 1 hour
